Pulp were ace once again. Nice set, but maybe F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. could've come a little later; seemed a weird song to open with. it's such a dark song...it could've done with a bit more natural darkness (and a little less daylight and sunshine). Three cheers for the person who decided Pulp were to play in a forest; it was a beautiful venue. No corporate advertisements to distract anyone from the music or the setting, and vendors selling food at *real* prices! A night to be remembered (Tom Draper)

Thetford was excellent. I had a brilliant time. The setting was again very picturesque, the atmosphere happy & relaxed & we passed the time waiting for Pulp, taking this in & discussing Pulpy matters down on the front row. The excitement builds while the stage is set for Pulp. Then, finally, there they were. Well, most of them & all looking happy. Unlike Sherwood, Jarvis did his normal thing of following on after a little interval. No parka this time either. He leaps on the monitor & stares out at us while Pulp play the eerie opening bars to F.E.E.L.I.N.G. Not too sure it's the best opener, but it is one of the best live Pulp songs so it doesn't really matter. Sorted is good to have early on because it ensures everyone is in the mood for a fantastic concert in the trees. On we go through lots of favourite songs, Jarvis is very lively, jumping all over the stage & monitors & onto the platform in front of the stage just inches from us. He tells us he had a bad back, but you'd never know. He got us to chant 'Lumbago is not a crime'. That must be a 1st for a pop concert! He covers many varied subjects as usual, from Norfolk Broad boat trips to how plants breathe. Live Bed Show is now one to really look forward to with the instrumental ending which is wonderful. Here the stage was bathed in blue & Pulp were silhouetted as they played - it was absolutely magical..Jarvis finally did The Jacket Removal during the intro to Hardcore. But was he stuck in his jacket or was it perfect timing to tease us? He finally got free threw it down & gave it a Jarvis-hard-stare just in time to start the lyric. Whatever, it had everyone transfixed. His habit of winding the mic wire round his neck always looks a bit worrying. Not that there'd be a shortage of volunteers to give him kiss of life! Hardcore runs so perfectly into I Love My Life, which leaves Jarvis gasping on the floor 'breathe in breathe out' & this in turn could not be more perfectly followed by anything other than Sunrise. The start of Sunrise still makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up & the instrumental climax is gorgeous, add to that Jarvis jumping & writhing a foot or so away & you could think you're in heaven. Just the idiots behind remind you it's not, by choosing then to try & barge through us again to get to the front. Hard luck. Then they're gone, but soon return with Trees, the 'oldie' slot filled wonderfully by I Want You, how fantastic to hear that one. Babies makes up for it having to end. The second encore is a powerful Underwear & an excellent Common People, making up for the bodged CP at Sherwood. Then it's over. Pulp you were fantastic. (Toni Sutton)

First time I've been to an outdoor gig like this, the surrounding trees made it feel quite intimate, and there was a very relaxed atmosphere (picnic baskets and spliffs all round). I was looking forward to seeing the Coral and Richard Hawley but British Sea Power were a nice surprise (bit like a hyperactive Coldplay). So there was a bit of confusion when the next act came on, was is Richard Hawley's band or Pulp? It was Pulp, and L.O.V.E was a strange opener but Sorted got people going after that. There were some more simple backing images of trees and bushes, although Hardcore kept it's fifties' porno. Musically I think this is the tightest and happiest Pulp have been for a long time. I especially liked the extended version of Live Bed Show. Although I thought there could have been more singing along from the crowd, Pulp seemed genuinely happy, with some top banter from Jarvis, including a survey on whether we'd been boating on the Norfolk broads ("liars"), if any of us had suffered back pain ("repeat after me: lumbago is not a crime") and a repeat of his Brixton science lesson on why talking to plants is good for them, as he said this was one of the few occasions you really could "tell it to the trees. go on, no one will laugh." I Want You was a good oldie, and although Something Changed, Minnie, Joyriders, and Do You Remember The First Time would have been nice, the final encore of Underwear and Common People sent everyone home happy. All this and organised traffic at the end. Beats a soulless aircraft hanger sized arena any day. (Joe)

Wow! what a great gig, they'll have to do it again some time. The forest setting was so beautiful and it seemed really intimate for an outdoor gig. I've never been to a gig before where so many people brought chairs - weird. The mix of songs was terrific, ended up moshing while desperate for the loo, not a good combination after having 4 children! Couldn't have missed a moment of it, though I'm paying for it today - at 43 I should know better, but I'd do it all again tomorrow if I could. The only miniscule disappointment was the lack of the Coral, what happened to them? British Sea Power were ok although I was looking forward to hearing Richard's own stuff. Next stop for me is Reading, what will that bring? I just can't wait. (Lynn Langdown)

The reason for writing to you is just to give you a short reference about the concert Pulp played in Barcelona. The very first word is AMAZING. After a few raindrops that fell minutes before Pulp started, at 1.30 am they started with F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E., then Jarvis asked all of us for concentrate in not raining... and it worked!!! A great start for a great concert, full of their now-and-then-hits, like Babies, Joyriders, Live Bed Show, This is Hardcore, The Fear, Trees, Bad Cover Version (i also think that's one of the greatest songs of their last album). The last theme, a never ending version of Sunrise, was simply perfect. It was awesome! Jarvis made us laugh, vibrate, and after the concert i couldn't say a word. They even played Laughing Boy!!! Thank you Pulp! I wait until the next time we meet anxiously!!! (David)

The Primavera Festival was based at the "Poble Espanyol" in Barcelona which roughly translates to Spanish Village. Pulp were playing in the main square of the village which is apparently designed to look like a typical Spanish town square surrounded by old stone buildings. We decided to watch Pulp from a terrace that spanned two sides of the square, providing a perfect view of the stage from a very short distance.

Mark walked on stage first and started playing the first notes of F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. on the keyboard with the rest of the band (except Jarvis) following after. Jarvis entered to a huge cheer wearing his Gonzales T-shirt which was quite a hit since they had played earlier in the evening. There was an even more synth based introduction to FEELING thanks to Mark - it sounded absolutely brilliant making me realise that this song could never be overplayed. Jarvis started off the evening speaking quite simple English to the crowd, but by the end of it even those that could speak English tried hard to understand what he was on about!

Trees, Sorted and Laughing Boy (fab yet again!) followed after. I thought that I wouldn't be so lucky to hear the Live Bed Show (extended twice) version again for some reason - but tonight we were blessed and hopefully they'll carry on playing it for the Forest Tour. It was at this point that Jarvis began to become a bit playful. I think it was during Bad Cover Version that he tapped Nick's cymbal with his microphone. At the end of the song he jokingly told a person who had thrown his T-shirt onto the stage not to sue him if he got a cold or pneumonia! He then started mumbling about cold hands, warm hearts and how that was all bulls**t and that all English were all c**ts!!! It was almost as if he'd suddenly become drunk, but I don't think he was.

Next came Weeds (the drums sounded fab as usual) and then afterwards Jarvis started to roll about the stage as if he was incapable of walking and pretended to cry, at which point the band burst in with Help the Aged!! Help the Aged is one of those songs that I think sounds a bit dull on the album, but sounds absolutely fantastic and alive in concert so I love to hear it and if that wasn't good enough - it was followed by The Fear and This is Hardcore with Mark scurrying off before the end of Hardcore (as if he really needed the toilet) marking the end of the "1st Act".

Jarvis entered the stage after a quick break doing a bit of flamenco dancing which was greatly cheered by the Spanish, although I thought he resembled more Michael Flately and the Riverdance team. Two His'n'Hers songs - Joyriders and Babies - were played before Candida attempted to leave the stage presumably thinking that there would be a second encore, only to be shoo-ed back to her keyboards by Jarvis like a naughty schoolgirl! Something Changed followed, leaving Sunrise to the end (at which point it was almost sunrise - the concert ended at 3.15am!) which got the biggest cheer, probably the song I look forward to hearing most now 'cause it's when you can really let go, watch Jarvis let go and listen to that amazing acoustic sound coming out of Richards guitar.

All in all another fantastic evening/morning(!) ..five words... Roll on the Forest Tour! (Yvette Cooke)

The grand prize goes to a barefoot Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, who returned after a two-year hiatus to send the crowd home smiling on Saturday night. Cocker gives his all on stage, chatting amiably in between the twisted suburban tales of his songs, and then dancing like a man trying to run in several directions at once while the music plays. Several new songs were unveiled, including 'Weeds', another classic Pulp hymn to the downtrodden, and a glorious guitar-led climax in the form of 'Sunrise'..." Few would want to follow Beck, especially after an absence of two years, but Pulp are, to borrow their own terminology, a different class. First, the Antipodean context. Pulp are in Australia for the first time. Prior to "Common People", they had sold around nine albums here. "Disco 2000" is their biggest hit. Their first gig is in a laughably tacky, multi-tiered, chrome and glass dome reminiscent of the villain's lair in a cheap James Bond rip-off. And Jarvis Cocker is ensconced in a dressing room emblazoned with the irony-free legend "Star Suite".

Which is only right, if the roar which greets his belated entry onstage is any indication. Sure, ring-in guitarist Richard Hawley attempts some lager-aloft grandstanding as the slow, ominous intro to "The Fear" builds behind him, but the only kids who scream are the ones who mistake him for Jarvis. They're the ones wondering who the chick in the mirror-ball frock is, and how long Brett Anderson has been playing bass.

The point is, Pulp is a brand new flavour for most of this smartly-dressed clientele. Whoever wrote the set list understands this fact and relishes it. This is "hardcore" and, to the palpable annoyance of the 100-odd public radio devotees who remember "Babies" and "Lipgloss", it's very little else.

Not that they're complaining, as "Joyriders" and "Underwear" follow "Do You Remember The First Time?", even if the early tear through Pulp's relatively obscure back pages has Cocker glancing at his wristwatch at least once per song. His dry, Northern banter is engaging ("The reverse magnetism down here is freakin' me, man") and our first real-life exposure to the tall guy's startlingly uncoordinated arse-wiggling and elbow-pointing is a treat.

Eerily echoing Damon Albarn, who stood on the same spot not a year ago, Cocker takes the time to complain about the weather and to note that he has "a bad throat". Good-o. His best story is the one about the note he found earlier in his suite, the one begging him to play "Sorted For E's & Wizz" and signed by a fan's parents, The band obliges, to the vocal relief of the throng.

In less acclaimed manoeuvres, "Seductive Barry" is the first real error of judgement: great for those low-lit, wee-hours whisky binges back home, but way too early and too damn dense for this party. Jarvis shimmies his satin trousers to the stage edge and takes a red rose from an outstretched hand, but his failure to adequately install it in the buttonhole of his brown body shirt is a poetic reflection that the crowd's slipping slowly from his grasp.

The song climaxes with Cocker flat on his back, dry-humping the air. The gesture signals a near-relentless "Hardcore" showcase which keeps the bar staff busy for the next hour, only "A Little Soul" and a truly devastating "This Is Hardcore" lifting the spirits of crowd that almost seems to be waiting for something...

"Common People" takes its unimpeachable place at the end of the last encore, of course, and it's a euphoric event, in a sense the moment where Pulp's first gig in the reverse magnetism zone appears to both begin and end. And, for those who went out and bought "Disco 2000", well, they can always go home and play it after the show. Pulp may have just arrived in these parts, but they've already moved on.
